Caroline Cleaves Ceramics
"The challenge is to do the thing you have to do because you're in love with it and can't do anything else . . . because you will be unhappy if you can't do it."
- Warren MacKenzie

About my work
I make objects that reflect the mutable and timeless nature of clay. It's a medium that connects me to my species; clay is the primordial substance of human creativity. Our first objects - useful, ceremonial, and decorative were made of clay.
I gravitate towards altered shapes that refuse simple symmetry.
About me
I'm a cultural anthropologist by training, but probably would have been happier going to art school than graduate school. I've worked as a house cleaner, a museum educator, an NPR producer and a non-profit development director. I'm happiest making art.
I work out of Fleming Pottery where I discovered a group of fellow ceramicists who are collaborative, generous and good company. Lately, I've been exploring wild clay in New Jersey, which involves alot of mucking about.
